This article is for book lovers, looking for that something special. If you agree that a good book is akin to treasure then read on. The Inside Guide visited one of Valencia’s best locations for second hand books.
One of the things I miss about England is the sheer volume of second hand books for those who choose to seek them out. Detractors will tell you that most of them are trash but I disagree, that’s not the point! There might be a lot of rubbish but for those that look hard enough something magic can be found. I think this is why I am a fan of Re-Read, one of Valencia’s best places for second hand books. Re-Read is a chain which can be found across Spain and there are two in Valencia, both of which are quite central. The first on Gran Vía de Ramón y Cajal, the other in Russafa. These are fine examples of the bookstore genre with friendly staff, an eclectic playlist of music on the speakers and a pricing structure that won’t break the bank.
Seek and ye shall find
Both branches are a treasure trove for book lovers. They have a good range of fiction and non-fiction, old and new. What’s more, for non-Spanish speakers they have a decent collection in other languages including a good selection in English. I don’t go every week but when I do there always seems to be new things on the shelf. There are several excellent places to go in Valencia for books in English, many with a much bigger range but there is something about a second hand shop that appeals to me. I think it’s that element of the unknown. If you enter without a particular title in mind, searching for something that grabs your attention is all part of the fun.
Try leaving with just one!
The pricing system is clever and I wish more shops were so savvy. One book costs €4, two €6 and you can get five for €12. Needless to say, I rarely leave with just one. On second thoughts, perhaps it’s better that the pricing scheme is not replicated all that often! They also have some DVDs as well for those that still enjoy physical media movies. They will buy your old books off you so if you resolved to declutter the spare room then head their way. Me, I can’t ever seem to part with them. The place always seems busy, with a diverse clientele all hunting for a bargain. If you do, make sure to pick up one of the pretty bookmarks and postcards that adorn the cash desk.
For the love of a good book
In many ways I am an old fashioned sod, I have never quite taken to the concept of the eReader. For me, the feel of the paper in my hands, the smell and the cover art are all part of the experience of reading a good novel. Over the years I have built up a decent sized collection and while I have read plenty there are probably plenty more that are still on the not yet read pile. Over the years that pile has only got bigger. No matter how high it grows I am still a sucker for searching for another couple to add to my bookcase. If you are anything like me, I suggest paying a visit to Re-Read to see what you can find!
